The popularity of sites such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Digg has resulted in the rapidly exploding phenomenon of online social networking. Entrepreneurs can tap into this latest societal trend to see surging business profits.
Here are some reasons why social networking can benefit you if you have a small business:
- Networking online is a great way to get attention for your website and business. Do not think of online networking as a replacement for your conventional networking or your website. You can use social networking online to notify customers and contacts of developments in your business and to promote any new product or service.
- It can help your search engine optimization campaign. If you have presence on a large number of sites, search engines notice all the links and connect the links with the original website, thus giving your business a higher rank in searches for the specific keywords and making it easier for potential customers to find you.
- These natural inbound links can drive traffic to your original website. You can also get quality traffic driven to your website if you select networking websites, related to your niche.
- Networking websites offer unique branding opportunities. When you sign up for a networking site, you get your own unique URL. By including your brand name in the URL, you will not only be able to get favor from the search engines but can also build brand recognition among your present and potential clientele.
- Social networking sites allow you to interact with the customers, bring their attention to your services and products on offer, and make them aware of the latest company news – by giving them an insider’s glance.
- These websites can be effective channels of communication with your customers and show the human side of your company. By listening to their concerns and feedback, you will be able to show your genuine care.
- Such interaction with the customers will also allow you to do some product or service development, in tune with the market needs.
- By using social networking sites, you can participate in specific groups of interest, get connected with others in your industry and interact with them to see where you stand and what you can do to improve.
Twitter is an extremely popular site where you can send messages with a maximum of 140 characters. You can use Twitter to remind customers to revisit your website if something new and exciting is there.
If your site has good content, others might want to promote it. As soon as you tweet something, readers and followers find out about it. It is the fastest way of getting your message across to readers. Moreover, the limitation of 140 characters keeps the flab off, and allows the communication to be bang on target.
Twitter also helps in researching for your product or service. You can find out what consumers are looking for, what is selling and what is not. You can also put up a poll questionnaire for product development.
Twitter and other social networking sites, like DiggIt, LinkedIn, and Facebook allow you to post links along with messages, which in turn can help you drive traffic to your website. Your followers would be either existing customers or prospective consumers.
The more you interact with your followers on the social networking sites, the more you know what is good for business and can develop your business accordingly. Your posts can reflect your area of expertise, impress your clients and build up brand identity.
Millions of people across the world use social networking websites. You simply cannot afford to miss the opportunity to reach out to this potential global audience. Since these sites are free to use, all you have to do is to register, create a profile and start interacting with the people out there. So, what are you waiting for? Use the power of social networking to your advantage today!

The tools you talk about were not even around 5+ years ago and have now exploded. There has got to be some underlying reason for the popularity of these tools.
IMHO, it is because these tools facilitate human interaction between individuals all over the globe. Geographic borders no longer apply. They have also redefined human interaction in a positive way.
We can connect with people from our past on Facebook that most of us would have never heard from again. We never would have called these people on the telephone, but Facebook makes a “quick hello, glad to see that you are doing well” possible and gives most of us a warm feeling.
What we are seeing is just the tip of the iceberg, and we all can benefit from the social media phenomenon.
